Recommended Yarn

Any worsted #3 yarn will make an elegant coaster. You will need approximately 3-5 yards depending upon whether you are able to match gauge.

US Size G/6 or 4 mm hook
Scissors
Stitch Markers
Needle

Finished Measurements

The Herringbone Coaster size of 4.5″ x 4.5″ for the small and 5.5″ x 5.5″ for the large.  Finished size is approximate and may vary slightly based on ability to meet gauge.

Abbreviations

Stitch/stitches (st/sts)
Chain(s) (ch/chs)
Single Crochet (sc)
Double Crochet (dc)

Notes

  1. The pattern is crocheted in rows.
  2. Ch 1 at the beginning of each row/round does not count as a stitch.
  3. Ch 1 within each row/round counts as a stitch.
  4. Ch 3 does count as a stitch.

Gauge

With US size G/6 (4 mm) hook: 8 sts x rows 1-4 = 2″. Adjust your hook size if necessary to obtain gauge.

Small Herringbone Coaster Pattern

Row 1: Ch 26, 32 then sc in 2nd ch from hook, * ch 1, skip next st, 1 sc in next ch, repeat from * to end of
chain, turn. [(13 sc, 12 ch-1), (16 sc, 15 ch-1)]
Row 2: Ch 1, 1 sc in 1st st, *ch 1, skip next ch-1 sp, sc in next st, repeat from * to end of row, turn. [(13 sc, 12
ch-1) (16 sc, 15 ch-1)]
Row 3: Ch 1, 1 sc in 1st st, * ch 3, skip all of next (ch-1 sp and sc), sl st in next ch-1 sp 2 rows below (1st row).
Ch 3, skip all of next (sc, ch-1 sp). Sc in next st. Repeat from * to end of row, turn. [(5 sc, 8 ch-3, 4 sl sts), (6
sc, 10 ch-3, 5 sl sts)]
*Be sure to push ch-3 to back and work sts in front of ch-3, not over the ch-3 spaces.
Row 4: Ch 1, sc in 1st sc. (Working 2 rows below (2nd row) [(ch 1, skip next ch-1 sp, 1 dc next sc) twice. Ch 1,
skip next ch-1]. Working into last row (3rd row), 1 sc next sc. Repeat from * to end of row, turn. [( 5 sc, 8 dc,
12 ch-1), 6 sc, 10 dc, 15 ch-1)]

Row 5: Ch 1, sc in next sc. *Ch 3, skip all of the next (ch-1 sp, 1 dc). Sl st in next ch-1 sp 3 rows below (2nd
row). Ch 3, skip all of the next (1 dc, ch-1 sp). 1 sc in next sc. Repeat from * to the end of the row and turn.
[(5 sc, 8 ch-3, 4 sl sts), (6 sc, 10 ch-3, 5 sl sts)]
Row 6: Ch 1, 1 sc in 1st sc, *working into 2 rows below (4th row) [(ch 1, skip next ch-1 sp, 1 dc in next dc)
twice. Ch1, skip next ch-1 sp]. Working into the last row (5th row). 1 sc next sc. Repeat from * to the end of
the row and turn. [( 5 sc, 8 dc, 12 ch-1), 6 sc, 10 dc, 15 ch-1)]
Repeat rows 5 & 6 for the herringbone pattern until the square reaches:

  • 4″ x 4” for Small
  • 5” x 5” for Large
    Last Row: Ch 1, sc in each st across. [(25 sc), (31 sc)]
    Do not fasten off. Rotate your work to continue with the border on the right side of the square.
    Border
    Ch 1, (sc, ch 1, sc) in corner st, (ch 1, sc), repeat (11, 13) times down left side, (sc, ch 1, sc) in last st, (ch 1, sc), repeat (12, 14) times across bottom side, (sc, ch 1, sc) last st, (ch 1, sc), repeat (11, 13) times up right side, (sc, ch 1, sc) in last st, (ch 1, sc), repeat (11, 13) times across top side.
    Fasten off. Weave in ends.
