Skill Level
Advanced Beginner. Uses simple, common stitches and techniques. Special Instructions are given for the half double crochet cluster, the half double crochet spike cluster, the spike half double crochet cluster and the herringbone half double crochet.
Recommended Yarn
Fingering #1 weight cotton yarn, approx. 25 yards.

Notes
- The pattern is worked in rows.
- Ch 1 does not count as a stitch.
- Cluster stitches begin in the same stitch/space previously worked

Not necessary for this crochet project.
Special Stitches/Techniques
Herringbone Half Double Crochet – yo, insert hook, pull up a loop and pull loop through 1st loop on hook, yo, pull through remaining loops on hook.
Half double crochet cluster – yo, insert your hook, yo and pull up a loop. Yo, insert hook into next ch/st, yo pull up a loop. Yo and pull through remaining loops on hook.
Half double crochet spike cluster – yo,insert your hook, yo and pull up a loop. Yo, insert your hook into the next ch/st one row below, yo and pull up a loop. Yo and pull through remaining loops on hook.
Spike half double crochet cluster – YO and insert your hook into ch/st one row below, YO and pull up a loop. YO and insert your hook into the next ch/st, YO and pull up a loop. YO and pull through all five loops on your hook.

Ch 9 to begin.
Row 1: Hhdc in 2nd ch from hook and each ch across, ch 1, turn. [8 hhdc]
Row 2: Hhdc in each st across, ch 1, turn. [8 hhdc]
Rows 3-41: Repeat row 2. [39 times]
Edging
Do not fasten off.
Ch 1, (hdc spike cluster, spike hdc cluster), repeat 20 times, 3 hdc clusters in corner ch st. Rotate, (hdc spike cluster, spike hdc cluster), repeat 3 times, 3 hdc clusters in corner ch st. Rotate, (hdc spike cluster, spike hdc cluster), repeat 20 times, 3 hdc clusters in corner ch st. Rotate, (hdc spike cluster, spike hdc cluster), repeat 3 times, 3 hdc clusters in corner ch st.
Sl st to join to beginning st.
